How to Properly Package Your Belongings

Posted on: May 5, 2025

Whether you’re storing items short-term during a move or long-term for peace of mind, proper packaging is key to keeping your belongings safe and sound. At Bethlehem Self Storage, we want to make your storage experience as stress-free as possible—so we’ve put together some expert tips to help you pack like a pro.

Use the Right Boxes

Stick with sturdy, high-quality moving boxes. Avoid reused or worn-out boxes that could collapse under weight. Use smaller boxes for heavier items (like books) and larger boxes for lighter things (like bedding or clothing).

Tip: Uniform box sizes make stacking easier and more secure.

Label Everything Clearly

Use a thick marker to label each box on multiple sides. Be specific—“Kitchen” is helpful, but “Kitchen – Pots & Pans” is better. Number your boxes and keep a simple inventory list for easy access later.

Wrap Fragile Items with Care

Glassware, ceramics, electronics, and other breakables need cushioning. Use bubble wrap, packing paper, or even towels to create a buffer inside the box. Make sure there’s no empty space that allows items to shift.

Pro tip: Label these boxes as “FRAGILE” and store them on top.

Seal Boxes Tightly

Always use strong packing tape to seal both the top and bottom of your boxes. Reinforce corners and edges if the box is heavy. This prevents accidents during loading, unloading, and stacking.

Avoid Overpacking

It’s tempting to cram everything into fewer boxes, but overstuffed boxes are more likely to break or cause injuries when lifting. Stick to a manageable weight—aim for under 40 pounds per box when possible.

Protect Furniture and Larger Items

Cover furniture with blankets or plastic wrap to keep dust, moisture, and scratches at bay. Disassemble larger pieces if possible to save space and prevent damage.

Use Plastic Bins for Long-Term Storage

For items you plan to store for months or years, consider using plastic bins with lids. They offer better protection from humidity, pests, and general wear and tear.

Keep Essentials Accessible

Pack a “first in, last out” box with essentials like tools, cleaning supplies, or seasonal items you might need. Store it near the front of your unit for easy access.

Proper packaging helps you get the most out of your storage unit—and gives you peace of mind knowing your belongings are protected. Need packing supplies or advice? Just ask! Our Bethlehem Self Storage team is here to help every step of the way.
